What support is already out there for Staffies?

Staffy campaigns/support/charities:

There's a lot of Staffy support groups and forums and sites and all that, but there's nothing majorly impacting. Nothing that stands out. Mostly your bog-standard poster, and information downloads and stories, which unless looked for, wouldn't be found.

Direction..

Found a bit of a hurdle in trying to get direction into my campaign, I've now decided I'm going to aim to raise awareness that Staffordshire Bull Terriers have a bad reputation that they don't deserve, and that they need rehoming. - This is going to be my new proposition.

New Brief (again..)

Brief
Background:
Battersea Dogs Home takes in unwanted Staffies and tries to give them new homes. The breed has a bad reputation and therefore are always taken. Compared to other breeds the figures of staffies are a lot higher and stay at the home for a lot longer.
All the figures below relate to Staffordshire Bull Terriers and Staffie crosses and are taken from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home’s three sites in London, Old Windsor and Brands Hatch.
Staffies at Battersea:
  • In 2011, 5,074 dogs arrived at Battersea. Out of these, 1,869 were Staffies, meaning they accounted for 37% of all dogs. All bull breeds combined accounted for 47% of dogs.
  • Battersea has seen Mongrel numbers decrease from 5,381 in 2000 to 621 in 2011, while Staffie numbers have increased from 865 in 2000 to 1,869 in 2011.
  • 40% of all the Staffies arriving at Battersea in 2011 were under two years old, suggesting that people buy them as puppies and then dump them at an early age.
  • The average stay for a Staffie at Battersea is 62 days, compared to 14 days for a Bichon Frise and 39 days for a Husky. There is no time limit for how long a dog can stay, but the average stay among all breeds is 45 days.
  • Battersea’s Clinic neutered an average of two Staffies a day in 2010
Neutering Staffies already owned by dog owners, and those looking for dogs

New Project - Self-Directed

Possible Products

Dangerous Dogs Act

• Section 1 of the Act stipulates that owners of the ‘type of dog known as a pit bull terrier’ and three other breed types (Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino and Fila Braziliero) must fulfill certain strict requirements. These requirements include keeping the dog muzzled and on a lead at all times whilst in a public place, having the dog micro-chipped, keeping the dog insured against third party liability and having the dog neutered with the aim that these types of dogs would eventually become extinct in the UK. The dog also had to have its details registered on the Index of Exempted Dogs maintained by DEFRA on behalf of the Government.

Owners of these types of dogs could no longer give away or sell their dogs. Unless the requirements were met, keeping such a dog in the UK would become illegal and any person who owned a prohibited type dog would be committing an offence unless the dog had been registered on the Index. Owners were offered the option of accepting a token compensation from the Government if they chose to have their dogs voluntarily destroyed.

Possible Propositions:

  • Against breeding - highlight issues
  • How to look after the dog in order for it not to get put down, etc
  • Readjust the law so that dogs can be re-homed.
